Snappy Answers to Stupid At-Home Dad Questions

AlwaysHomeandUncool's picture

Much to my mother's chagrin, I owe much of my sense of humor to the usual gang of idiots at Mad Magazine. Imagine my reaction when I read this weekend that Al Jaffee, mastermind of back page fold-in, received a long overdue Reuben for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year from his peers at the National Cartoonist Society.

Vin-di-CAAA-tion!

Where would I have been without Al Jaffee, Mort Drucker's movie and TV satires, Sergio Aragones' "Spy vs. Spy" tales, Don Martin's "Adventures of Captain Klutz" and the rest? Probably on my yacht in the Caribbean, counting the millions I made in a real profession.

But I'd be counting very, very dourly.

So, in tribute to one of Mr. Jaffe's most influential works in my life, here are some "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" about being an at-home dad:

Convention Video!!!!

So before you freak out, this is not footage from the 2007 Hospitality Suite, but it is my video entry for...

the 2008 At Home Dad's Sacramento Convention Music Video with Ukuleles and Singing Stuff Contest,

Dad died saving his little girl

With an out-of-control car bearing down, Joseph Richardson grabbed his 4-year-old daughter and held her up out of harm's way.

first day as sahd

cowabungachris's picture

not sure if you guys will remember me. i posted a while back about considering to be a sahd. well, i did it. yesterday was my last day in the corporate rat race, and today is my first official day as a sahd. my first thought when i woke up this morning was, "god, what have i committed myself into?" along with a slight feeling of panic. i know that this is the best thing for our my wife, myself, and my 1yr old daughter, but it's hard getting used to the idea. my wife makes a great income as a PA, so money really wasn't the issue. we wanted a better family life.

Need a starting head count for the convention

dayv27's picture

Guys.
I need to start working on rough planning for the Thursday and Friday events so I know what I need for space and event planning. If you guys who are going/thinking about going to the convention could head over here and take a 2 question survey for me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

SAHD Transition Blues

I think I've seen something like this posting before so I hope to get some fresh perspectives. I started staying at home full time last Fall. I have two kids (1 and 3) and have always been a semi-primary caregiver but this is now a full time job. My wife works insane 7-day-a-week hours so even when I worked during the day, I was still home alone with the kids at night and on weekends.

I Surrender

OK, So I had to give in and get more help. I am an Adjunct Professor at a number of schools doing over full time work. I take care of the kids 3 days a week and really most of the time when the family is together. I was trying to start Weight Watchers and other things.

Having a hard time...

Howdy. I guess I should say that I'm not having a hard time with my son (he's six months old), from what I gather he's pretty normal and the two of us have a pretty decent routine going. What I'm having a hard time dealing with is being a stay at home dad.

Odd looks

mywifes_houseb..ch's picture

Ok I know that this stay at home dad thing is new for a lot of people, but do you get odd looks from people when you say you stay home with the kids?

I get funny looks all the time I was even asked if I was just lazy and di not want to work. My wife was telling a 80 year old lady at a craft fair that I stay home with the kids she said "oh that is nice dear" walked off and avoided my wifes table the rest of the day. Some times I have to explain the hole story on why I stay hoe for people to get it, lets just hope evey gets why soon.

Convention information for all the new guys

dayv27's picture

Hey New guys!

First off, if I haven't sent you a "welcome" in your respective threads, WELCOME!! Glad to have you out of the woodwork and actually posting.

You may have noticed a mention or two hundred about this "convention" thing. What is the convention you ask? It's a great opportunity to take a weekend away from it all, more or less, to hang out with other at-home dads and learn and share ideas, tips, experiences, and support from others in your job field.

Time outs for 18 month old?

JonMcP's picture

Got a question for you gentlemen. My 18 month old has started hitting... never in anger, but in playfulness she'll take a swipe at me, my wife, or the dog any chance she gets. We've been putting her on the "naughty step" and sitting with her (while ignoring her) for two minutes EVERY time she does it (thinking that consistency is the trick here). 50% of the time this results in tears, the rest of the time she taps her feet, looks at her socks, or does any number of things that make it seem as if she's not bothered by the naughty step at all.

Help Loosing that Weight

RenoDad's picture

I noticed comments in one of the other threads about trying to get rid of some of the pounds many of us have put on. I am struggling hugely with this. One of my problems is that many of my previous favorite exercises (cycling, skiing, kayaking) take 3-4 hours to do from start to finish. Of course finding any time during the day seems to be a chore these days.

Any suggestions from the crowd?

Greg

Breakfast

JPhillip's picture

Will some of you guys share kid-friendly breakfast ideas with me? My offerings are slowly deteriorating. I have stooped to pop-tarts recently (low fat) of course. I need some help in this department.

Vaccines

I've been spending the past several weeks reading about vaccines...(and yes, I searched before posting here)...

The child of a tiger is a tiger.

Haitian proverb

There are three degrees of filial piety. The highest is being a credit to our parents, the second is not disgracing them; the lowest is being able simply to support them.
