You got something to say, so you Blog it, right? Sweet!
There is nothing quite like the feeling of Blogging and developing a readerbase and spreading your word, right? Plain and simple, or you wouldn’t be Blogging!
There is nothing quite like the empowering feeling of getting read and quoted and maybe the occasional email interview exchange about your Blog. Your Blog is taking off and seeing traffic, your stat numbers are getting substantial and you just can’t believe people have an interest in what you have to say, or even people are finding you when they Google the words “stay at home dad“, “at home dad“, “**your locale** stay at home dad” or gasp! Parenting terms such as “diaper rash strategies” or heaven forbid “poopy butt crack” like I was so routinely Googled on. Maybe it’s something more relevant or obscure but you get the idea, people are getting into what you have to say and you’re digging it!
The term empowerment covers a vast landscape of meanings, interpretations, definitions and disciplines ranging from psychology and philosophy to the highly commercialized self-help industry and motivational sciences. Sociological empowerment often addresses members of groups that social discrimination processes have excluded from decision-making processes through – for example – discrimination based on disability, race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Empowerment as a methodology is often associated with feminism. Empowerment as a methodology is often associated with feminism; go figure that masculinity would be left out of this definition found on Wikipedia. Keep Empowerment in the back of your mind as you read on.
You are feeling fully empowered because of your Blog and that is totally awesome, but what happens if the local news channel emails you wanting to do a short video clip on you because of an article you wrote about the lack of changing tables at your museum of natural history, kind of dated I know and sorry but you get the idea, So you Cowboy Up and deal with it, at least it’s not live and there is no audience to chastise you; after all it’s only a couple minutes, and your wife was in labor for ten god-awful hours so how bad could two minutes possibly be, so you agree!
Remember you were Blogging to spread the word, so you spread the word and now your local state run government Fatherhood Council wants you to speak live in person at a seminar they are holding for a group of 5 neighboring state parenting and childcare providers, and you freak when you read it.
Be empowered and just do it! Remember you Blogged it because you felt it, and now they want to hear from da’ man himself in person. This has happened to me in the last month so I Cowboyed It Up and did it, aided with a PowerPoint presentation so I could come across as being professional. I have made six speeches in the last two and a half months in a class or at meeting and my All Pro Dad group which I facilitate and it just hasn’t been that bad, the positive comments I received afterwards far outweighed any nervousness I felt.
In order to Bring It On With Style you need to practice what you preach, you got the time, and you got the motivation every time you look down and see that precious smile and those eyes. Just do it! Soon you will develop your speech where you have your standard opening with a standard closing where you just have to tweak the content to your audience with an accompanying slideshow that just needs tweaking. Make a plan for when things do not go as planned and they will, find out about where you will be presenting at, ie. PowerPoint equipment and most important learn about your audience and adapt accordingly.
So in closing you are a Pro Dad and have been Blogging your word for years now and now people want to meet and hear from you so jump aboard and do it with gusto! The more you speak the easier it gets and pretty soon you will be saying “who needs notes, the slide is enough prompt to what needs to be said”. Climb aboard this unique opportunity becacause who knows where it will lead! Remember you started it all by Blogging and through the next stages of development you may be called upon to expound upon your theories, SO BRING IT ON. I kid you not, I am proof!
