Dreams are funny things. They drive us, ethereal as they may be. They give us something semi-tangible to shoot for. If we didn’t all have dreams, we wouldn’t have New Year’s Resolutions. Those are just little dreams we’d like to achieve. But, sometimes we have bigger ones.
Back in 2009, I had a vision. It was a website that like-minded dudes could use to find changing stations so they could change a diaper. I won’t bore you with the story here, but the genesis of this vision is on my About page. Needless to say, this has been harder than I initially imagined. When you get caught up in your fever-dream, you think everyone will embrace your dream as ferociously as you do. In my naivete, I assumed by now, that I’d have hundreds of cities across the U.S. mapped out for easy use for new dads.
Alas, that hasn’t happened. And I’m okay with that. Except, that 2014 is the year I NEED to make this happen on a grander scale. Currently, my map is interesting, but it’s not all that useful as there just isn’t enough data in it. And being a lowly blogger, I don’t have the funds to hire a call center to make the phone calls necessary to get a good chunk of data to jumpstart this thing. I haven’t really gone out and asked people directly for help very often, because I didn’t want to be ‘That Guy’. You know the one, the broken record who only says one thing ALL THE TIME.
You see them online all the time. “Buy my stuff!” “No, really, please…buy my stuff!” “Hey, did you know I had stuff for sale? You should buy it!”…
So, I backed away from that strategy. And it’s garnered me a modest following. But DadsWhoChangeDiapers isn’t just about fart jokes and funny ramblings as they hit my head. That’s the fun part, sure. And I love that! But, sitting down, I had to stare at the cold hard fact: the raison d’être for this entire site is the map. I’m currently writing a proposal for a Kickstarter campaign or an Indigogo campaign to help fund the production of an app, but for now, I need to focus on the map. The map creates a database of nearest changing stations based on your location. If you would like to add a location to the map, save this link on your phone’s browser and contribute to the site. The next time you find a changing station in a men’s room, add it to the map so other dads can have that piece of mind that there is one available.
Recently, it came to my attention that another dad blogger decided to ‘make it his mission’ to get more changing stations in men’s rooms. I then found out a friend of mine contacted him regarding my site and was promptly brushed off. This saddens me. Mostly because I’m not opposed to partnerships to make this happen. I’m not in this for some sort of spotlight. I just want to make a product that new families can use to make sure a baby can get a diaper changed in a clean place that’s dad-accessible if needs be.
This is where you come in. I need your help. I need you to share this site, this mission, to everyone you can. I need more people adding locations. I need partnerships. I can’t do this alone.
If you like the idea behind my site and if you wish you had one of these when you were a new dad, if you wish it was more usable for you right now, please, help a daddy out. The next clean bum, might be because of you.
